The lighting industry continues to seek inventive ways to make light more efficient and ultimately more appealing to vastly improve the user experience…

Inspiration can come from many places, and for lighting, it only makes sense that those seeking new revelation would turn to the sky. Consider the work of American artist James Turrell, globally renowned for his interpretation of light, space, and playfulness in terms of perceived reality. He fancies the sky his studio, material, and canvas—creating a trompe l’oeil effect where he figuratively “drops the bass” on depth perception. As Calvin Tomkins of the New Yorker once said, “His work is not about light or a record of light; it is light—the physical presence of light made manifest in sensory form.”

Captivated by this concept, fixture designers found a way to reinterpret what Turrell was doing in the art world in a way that was commercially applicable. Dubbed “veiled ambient” lighting, it’s a brilliantly minimalist breakthrough that enables light channels to visually recede into the ceiling, virtually disappearing. The illumination is present, but the source is barely perceptible. Jon Steele, GM of Prudential Lighting, pioneer of this emerging design, commented on the inspiration behind the concept. “We wondered if there was a way to pump light through channels that felt like daylight on a cloudy day, with no shadows or sense of source. We accomplished this through incredibly uniform indirect lighting with a ‘forever’ look that appears seamlessly integrated into the architecture.”

Our sales superhero hangs up his suit. Cliff out. (Drops mic).

After three decades of delightfully unpredictable antics and predictably quotable quotes
(we call ‘em Cliffisms), our very own Mr. Van Wagner is retiring.

What will we miss most? Hard to say. It all kind of blends together – the good-natured verbal sparring over politics, stories of hula-hooping our donut-shaped O fixture in a sales meeting (oh yes, he did) – and just his endearing, all-around bear-hugging Cliffness. He has a presence and warmth and energy and incredible gusto for life that makes even non-smilers smile.

He knows our fixtures and installations like the back of his hand, yet his sales technique was unique to say the least. Never one to merely recap features and benefits from the spec sheet, he often summed up his pitch for our luminaries by simply saying, ‘Chicks dig it.’ (Sold.) If you were fortunate enough to have been a customer in his territory, you know this. Dull, a Cliff meeting was never.

He has been a critical contributor, an inspiring (and highly entertaining) team member for 30 years – our secret weapon if you will – as we’ve grown into the technology-optics leader we are today. So upon his retirement, we’re deliriously happy for him, and yes, a little sad for us. But we have a feeling we’ll be seeing him around.

Cliff, all the best. We’ll miss ya, fella.

We’d be thrilled to feature your projects (and get you some free press and the admiration of your peers while we’re at it). Send a few deets to marketing@prulite.com, and we’ll go from there.

Onward. Upward. Award-ward.

Blog-Awards
2014 and 2015 were good years, no doubt.
We received nine (count ‘em, NINE) 2014-15 Illumination Awards from the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) for a variety of forward-thinking new designs.

Awards included: MicroCove and MicroWash with a phenomenal combination of light distribution (optics) and industry-best efficiencies. Stream, a new approach to recessed linear with a hidden LED light source for an illusory effect reminiscent of James Turrell’s works of light. The awards keep rolling in for our Bionic and P40 Series with an array of optical wonders: Ceiling Wash, Batwing, Wall Wash and Wall Grazer. Mount these fixtures nearly any way you can imagine, linear, wall, surface, recessed or perimeter regressed, we encourage you to check out our room application comparisons.

We also won four Architectural SSL PIA Awards and Architectural Record’s exclusive Record Product of 2014 for Stream.

Feeling inspired? Us too. These recent industry accolades have propelled us into 2016 energized and intent on accomplishing even more.

Bland corporate holiday card? Borrrring.

Holiday

This crew deserves an all-out bash.

In December, we sat down to an insanely tasty company-wide Chinese-food feast complete with cookies – and (good news!) – zero fortunes that read, ‘That wasn’t chicken.’ There were gifts for the kiddos, and a live Santa so convincingly real we’re rethinking our corporate stance on that topic. Festivities concluded with a few too many visits to the photo booth because – well, do we really have to explain?

Here’s to outbesting our best year yet in 2016!

Holiday1
